2nd : Embedded Systems - Day 5

We got a few more sensors yesterday such as reed switch, button microphone (which was out of stock earlier) and also picked up SN7447 (BCD-to-7 segment decoder) with a 7-segment display.
The work now is to be divided and managed as a team. This we will decide today. Then issues like project management can also be dealt with in our study.

What I observed today was noteworthy. People will be self driven towards performance when the environment is conducive. So, many things play a part in the success or failure of an endeavor. It is the role of the manager to increase the positives and reduce the negatives.

Mark my words, some day in the future they will come back to you !

Initial study on LDR and thermistor is over and we have to now prepare sensor modules - which you can call as the refinement of the activity. Usually, refinement will take more time as the module must be used in a product. They should deliver in real time. No room for error. No time for corrections.

Picture this scenario...

You are asked to finalise the sensor module of a temperature sensor (converts temperture to voltage). You conducted the test on ONE circuit using one set of components and it seems to be OK. But will you OK it for production ? Are you confident that ,when they take it up for production and go on to manufacture one lakh units , they all will work exactly the same way as the first one ?

You will realise that design is one game and production is a totally different ball game ! That is why you also have PRODUCTION ENGINEERING as a specialisation. I shall delve into this aspect a little later. Incidentally , if you have microsoft office suite, you will also have MS Project with it. Else, try getting it. It is simple to use. Also, there is an openSource called GanttProject and you have a comparison of various Project Management software too.

We hope to have sensor modules for light, temperature, sound and movement by next week. Yes, I know what you are thinking , they are already available in the market....but I want to start from scratch. Know the fundamentals that is :)

Yesterday, the team working on the ADC module also rigged up the SN7447 with the seven segment display. And a few valuable lessons were learnt. Read the specifications BEFORE testing ANY circuit. How often we IGNORE this sane advice ?

Based on the observations made during this experiment, I framed a question for all who have studied DICA (Digital Integrated Circuits and Applications).

Q. Why do ACTIVE LOW outputs have OPEN collecter configurations while ACTIVE HIGH configurations have internal pull-up ?

Finally, a note to students who are following my blog : These observations are only a record of what I am doing in the department. It is written from a student's perspective. It is NOT intended to be a ONE STOP KNOWLEDGE BANK. It should be read along with OTHER material. Do not hesitate to share your views/criticisms/experiences. Anything helps.

Have a blast this weekend
Drive carefully
